Built by Farmers, Raced by Champions
Scotland’s Home Circuit.
Knockhill exists because a sheep farmer from Fife had the conviction to build it himself.
Tom Kinnaird set out with a digger in 1972 and began carving a circuit from the hillside on his land at South Lethans Farm, connecting old farm service roads with the route of a disused mineral railway that had served Lethans Colliery before closing in 1951.
By the autumn of 1974 the 1.3-mile course was complete - swooping and falling down the hillside before connecting with the old railway bed and climbing back up through a tight hairpin to the start.
The inaugural motorcycle race meeting was held that same autumn. The first car race followed on 18 May 1975. David Coulthard and Allan McNish both spent long days at Knockhill making the transition from karts to cars on this circuit before their careers took them to Formula One.
The British Touring Car Championship arrived in 1992 and has returned every year since - the only BTCC round held in Scotland.
The circuit runs 1.3 miles in International configuration with 120 feet of elevation change across nine corners. McIntyre's, Butcher's, the Chicane, Clark's, Hislop's, Leslie's Bend, the Duffus Dip, Taylor's Hairpin - compact, relentless, and unlike anything else on the British calendar.
It is the only circuit in the world licenced by the FIA to run in both directions.
What to Expect at Knockhill
Knockhill sits six miles north of Dunfermline in Fife, thirty minutes from Edinburgh via the M90 and the Queensferry Crossing, and 40 miles from Glasgow.
Edinburgh Airport is the nearest international gateway, under an hour from the circuit.
Parking is extensive and complimentary across multiple areas within the circuit grounds. Your Merrills experience coordinator will arrange all paddock access and circuit logistics in advance.
The Media Centre provides a fully equipped private meeting and conference facility with integrated AV and flexible seating, available for private hire alongside a track day for corporate groups combining business with driving.
Kinnaird's Bistro overlooks the main paddock and provides private dining with an on-site chef and full catering options throughout the day.
For clients looking to extend beyond the circuit, Edinburgh is 30 minutes south - one of Europe's finest cities for dining, accommodation, and culture, and the natural base for a wider programme built around a day at Knockhill.
