The Country Estate That Became a Racing Circuit
One of the Most Visually Striking Circuits in Britain.
Oulton Hall, the ancestral seat of the Grey-Egerton family - Lords of the Manor since Henry VII - stood in these grounds for centuries before fire took it in 1926.
What remained was parkland: rolling Cheshire countryside, mature woodland, a lake, and the estate's access roads threading through it all. During the war, the land became a staging camp for the US Army in the run-up to the Normandy landings. General Patton was based here. His physical training instructor was Joe Louis - Heavyweight Champion of the World - who gave exhibition bouts in the valley at Deer Leap, the same dip in the landscape that drivers still carry flat today.
When the army left, members of the Mid-Cheshire Car Club looked at the estate roads and saw a circuit. With Sir Philip Grey-Egerton's permission, they mapped one out in early 1953. By August it was ready. Tony Rolt won the inaugural Formula Two race. A year later, the Gold Cup was established - and it quickly attracted the leading drivers in the world.
Stirling Moss won it five times, the first in 1954 in a Maserati 250F delivered that morning from the factory, the last in 1961 in the four-wheel drive Ferguson P99. Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme, and Jackie Stewart all raced here in the Gold Cup's Formula One era.
The circuit today runs 2.692 miles in International configuration, following the natural contours of the estate through Old Hall, Cascades, Shell Oils, Hislop's, Knickerbrook, Hamilton, Deer Leap, and Lodge. It is hilly, technical, and among the most visually dramatic circuits in Britain - a place where the landscape itself is part of the challenge.
What to Expect at Oulton Park
Oulton Park sits near Little Budworth in Cheshire, accessible from Junction 18 or 19 of the M6, with Manchester and Liverpool both within 40 minutes.
Manchester Airport & Liverpool John Lennon Airport are each less than 25 miles from the circuit.
