Seventy-Five Years of Racing History on This Tarmac
Where Formula One Began
On 13 May 1950, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret took their seats in the Royal Stand at a former RAF bomber base in Northamptonshire.
Below them, 21 drivers from nine countries lined up on a grid laid out between hay bales on the old perimeter road.
Nino Farina, in an Alfa Romeo 158, led from pole. When he crossed the line two hours and thirteen minutes later, he had not only won the British Grand Prix - he had won the first ever Formula One World Championship race.
Silverstone is where it all started. The airfield had been deserted since 1946 when a group of enthusiasts found it and put on an impromptu race in 1947. The event became known as the Mutton Grand Prix, after one of the competitors struck a sheep that had wandered onto the runway.
Within three years, the same tarmac was hosting the birth of the most prestigious motorsport competition on Earth. The circuit has been reconfigured and rebuilt many times since. The Wing - a 390-metre pit and hospitality complex designed by Populous - opened in 2011 and transformed Silverstone into one of the most advanced motorsport facilities in the world.
The Hamilton Straight, named in 2020 in recognition of Lewis Hamilton's nine British Grand Prix victories, now carries cars past the front of The Wing at over 180mph.
The circuit today runs 3.660 miles in Grand Prix configuration, taking in the corners of Copse, Maggots, Becketts, Chapel, Stowe, Vale, Club, Abbey, Farm, Village, the Loop, Aintree, Woodcote, and Luffield.
It has been testing the best drivers in the world for 75 years.
What to Expect at Silverstone
Silverstone sits at the heart of England - 90 minutes north of central London via the M40 and A43, and 60 minutes south of Birmingham.
Helicopter transfers can be made direct to the paddock for those arriving by air. Parking is extensive and complimentary.
Your Merrills experience coordinator will arrange paddock access, passes, and all circuit logistics in advance - there is nothing to organise on arrival.
The Wing building houses some of the finest event and hospitality infrastructure of any circuit - or venue for that matter - in the world. Its upper floors contain conference and reception spaces, private suites with direct pit lane views, and a media centre divisible into six separate rooms accommodating up to 420 guests in total.
For corporate clients, the flexibility of The Wing makes it well suited to product launches, private dinners, presentations, and awards events with a backdrop that requires no dressing.
For those who want to make more of the day, Escapade Silverstone beside the track - a collection of 60 private villas with trackside and countryside outlooks, pool, sauna, gym, and The Gallery Restaurant and Bar serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with views across the circuit.
The Clubhouse roof terrace stretches across the Silverstone estate, with sightlines covering nine corners of the track.
It is the rare sort of place.
