Seven Decades of Racing on this former Norfolk Airfield

The Test-Bed of choice for Le Mans Champions

Snetterton was built in 1943 as a base for the 96th United States Air Force Bomber Group - B-17 Flying Fortresses operating over occupied Europe from a flat stretch of Norfolk farmland.

When the Americans left in 1948, the land returned to its owner, Fred Riches. Two members of the Aston Martin Owners Club approached him in 1951 and asked whether they could race on the old perimeter roads. Riches agreed, on one condition: no racing during Sunday church services.

The first event was held on 27 October 1951. Ken Wharton set the fastest time of the day in an ERA R11B at an average of 82.4mph.

Within a decade, the circuit had become one of the most important testing venues in British motorsport. The Lotus factory used Snetterton to develop race-winning cars. Bentley ran their first Le Mans challenger here before taking it to France. Audi tested the R8 on this tarmac before it won Le Mans outright. Non-championship Formula One races brought Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Jack Brabham to Norfolk in the 1960s.

In 2011, the layout was extended to create the 2.97-mile Snetterton 300, with a new infield section and corners named after Agostini, Hamilton, Brundle, and Justin Wilson. The Revett Straight runs for 960 metres. The circuit is fast and demanding in equal measure - it rewards mechanical sympathy and full commitment.

What to Expect at Snetterton

Snetterton sits just off the A11 in Norfolk, 19 miles southwest of Norwich and within straightforward reach of Cambridge, the Midlands, and London via the M11.

Parking is extensive and complimentary across multiple areas within the circuit grounds. Your Merrills experience coordinator will arrange paddock access and all circuit logistics in advance.

The circuit's hospitality suites sit trackside with views across the start-finish straight and pit lane, available for private hire for corporate groups requiring a dedicated space between sessions.

Tyrrells Restaurant provides on-site dining throughout the day.

For clients looking to extend beyond the circuit, Norwich offers some of the finest dining and accommodation in East Anglia - a medieval city within thirty minutes of the paddock, with the Norfolk Broads and the North Norfolk coast within easy reach for those building a wider programme around the day.
